ATTEMPT FOR EQUATION (Ana Frangovska)

Public space is a space in which the interests of the community and its subjects as individuals are articulated. As an arena for political debate and participation, public space is fundamental to democratic governments. But is what is happening in public always consistent with Chantal Mouffe’s theory of “agonistic pluralism” which favors antagonisms between the policies of positions of power and “radical democratic citizenship” rather than consensus? This is not always the case, as neo-liberal quasi-democratic societies still use methodologies to implement their policies and ideologies, bypassing harsh criticism of public opinion and critical thought, even in the realm of public space.

Interventions and activist actions are of particular importance in the context of creating a protest visual culture.
